National Farmland Ecosystem Observation and Research Station in Qiyang

The National Farmland Ecosystem Observation and Research Station in Qiyang was established in 1960 in Hunan province. It was selected as one of the first national pilot field stations in 2001, and was formally named as the National Farmland Ecosystem Observation and Research Station in Qiyang, Hunan province after evaluation by the Ministry of Science and Technology. It was included in the National Advanced Group of Field Science and Technology Work in 2009, and named an excellent field station in 2018.

Since 1975, the research station has established 18 long-term field experiments on soil fertility and ecological environment, including six long-term field experiments with history of over 30 years. The station boasts the longest experimental periods and the most experiments in quantity among stations in China's agricultural field system.

Based on soil science and farmland ecology research, the station has long been engaged in the comprehensive improvement and utilization of red soil and sustainable development of agricultural production and overcoming of environmental problems in the red soil region of southern China. It boasts distinct academic advantages in red soil improvement and nutrients high-efficiency utilization, agricultural environmental protection in red soil areas, and degraded red soil restoration technology.

In addition, its research on the natural resources and ecological environment in the red soil area, including soil, water, fertilizer, and climate, and especially on regional ecological environment evolution, fertilization and soil environment and the on long-term effects of fertilization has reached the international advanced level and is playing an irreplaceable important role.

The station also serves as a comprehensive research platform and a window for the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences on the agricultural system in southern China's red soil region, as well as an important experimental demonstration and research base for soil science, agronomy, and environmental science.

The research direction of the station includes the acidification mechanism and restoration technology of red soil farmland ecosystems, the characteristics of long-term changes in the agricultural ecological environment of red soil hilly areas, the ecosystem structure of red soil and the process of its functional evolution in response to the environment, and comprehensive high-efficiency utilization technology and sustainable development in agriculture in red soil hilly areas.
