The Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), staged a demonstration on Sept 28 in Huantai county in East China's Shandong province — showcasing the smart farming system for the main wheat and maize rotation production areas in the Huang-Huai-Hai region. The event was witnessed by Ye Yujiang, vice president of CAAS and Zhou Wei, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The demonstration highlighted the smart farming technology system — featuring innovations such as crop phenotyping monitoring, nutrient diagnoses with variable fertilization, and precision irrigation within 67-hectare demonstration plot for wheat and maize rotation. The technology is said to seamlessly integrate real-time monitoring, intelligent diagnosis, quantitative regulation and variable operations — allowing for continuous monitoring and intelligent analysis of critical agricultural data, including soil moisture, crop growth, disaster conditions and yields. It develops three-tiered fertilization prescriptions along with grid-based precision irrigation and variable spraying prescriptions.

During the demo, the precision of wheat and maize sowing operations exceeded 95%, the accuracy of the variable fertilization decision model topped 86%, while the identification accuracy for maize brown spot and Asian corn borer hit 87% and 89%, respectively. This outcome achieved data-driven and precise management throughout the entire crop cultivation process.
