IARRP successfully conducted a series of training workshops on scientific crop fertilization

IARRP | Updated: 2026-10-19

In the run-up to the transition from summer to autumn planting, under the overall guidance of the Scientific Fertilization Expert Group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP), CAAS, organized a series of effective crop fertilization training sessions. These sessions were part of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) National Key R&D Project called "Nutrient Resource Efficient Utilization and Emission Reduction Carbon Sequestration Synergistic Technology Model (2024YFD1701005)". Held across various locations in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plainand Northwestern Region, the sessions leveraged research findings to support field nutrient management for crops like corn, wheat, and cotton. The sessions trained nearly 500 individuals, including smallholder farmers, new-type professional farmers, and agricultural extension technicians.

In the Lingcheng District of Dezhou city, in East China's Shandong province, the training addressed the nutrient requirements throughout the full growth cycle of corn in the Huang-Huai-Hai Region. Experts recommended specialized formula fertilizers and bulk-blended fertilizers as base fertilizers, targeting mainstream products like slow-release, compound, and controlled-release fertilizers in the local market. The approach aims to cut the use of chemical fertilizers by over 10% based on existing soil fertility, thereby preventing nutrient waste from over-fertilization. In Yucheng City in Shandong, local fertilization habits were studied, and tailored Crop Green High-Yield Fertilization Guides were distributed. The guides translate essential parameters for split and reduced fertilization into practical instructions that farmers can easily understand and apply. Participants also visited the Yucheng Experimental Base of the CAAS. There, they observed firsthand crop growth under precise, small-amount, multiple-application fertilization via integrated water and fertilizer systems designed to yield 1.5 tons per hectare. In Huojia county, in central Henan province, new-type professional farmers received insights into new fertilizer products and efficient fertilization techniques, focusing on high-planting-density, high-yield corn models. The training provided systematic guidance on selecting and using foliar fertilizers for drones and drip-irrigation soluble fertilizers, helping to prevent indiscriminate purchasing and overuse. In Bachu county, in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the training addressed challenges such as the high proportion of saline-alkali land in oasis irrigation areas, low soil organic matter content and a complex market of diverse products. Agricultural extension technicians and farmers were encouraged to adopt commercial organic fertilizers, drip irrigation-specific value-added fertilizers, as well as intelligent fertilization recommendation systems, among other innovative products and technologies.

These training sessions emphasized the efficient use of nutrient resources and the synergistic technology model for emission reduction and carbon sequestration. Overall, the efforts focus on selecting suitable new fertilizer products, efficient fertilization technologies, and recommended fertilization methods that are tailored to different crops and regions. By doing so, they're said to ensure stable and increased crop yields, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions from farmland, steadily advancing regional agricultural production towards cost-efficient, green and low-carbon development.
