During the 23rd World Congress of Soil Science (WCSS 2026), the scientific session Conservation and Restoration of Black Soil Agroecosystems was successfully held on June 11-12 in Nanjing. The session was organized by Professor Xinhua Peng from the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, together with Professor Ole Wendroth from the University of Kentucky and other international experts.

The session featured 32 oral presentations and brought together researchers from China, the United States, Russia, Ghana, and other countries to discuss the latest advances in black soil conservation and restoration.

Presentations covered a wide range of topics, including conservation tillage practices, mechanisms of soil organic carbon loss and accumulation, freeze-thaw and erosion processes, the effects of straw return and microorganisms on soil fertility, and remote sensing technologies for monitoring and evaluating black soil resources. Each presentation was followed by lively discussions, providing opportunities for researchers to exchange ideas on scientific challenges and practical solutions for protecting black soils.

The session served as an important platform for international collaboration and academic exchange in black soil research. It also showcased China's latest achievements in black soil conservation and further enhanced the country's international influence in this important field of soil science.
