In order to promote the exchange and cooperation of the CAAS and the CIAT in agricultural technology, the two sides held planning conferences in Beijing, China and Hanoi, Vietnam in July 2018 and April 2019. These conferences discussed the establishment of an international joint Laboratory under the memorandum of understanding on scientific and technological cooperation. On May 27, 2019, the two sides signed the memorandum in Hanoi, under which the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) Joint Laboratory in Advanced Technologies for Sustainable Agriculture was set up.

The Laboratory focuses on the research of soil health and agro-ecological sustainable development technologies. It carries out exchanges and cooperation in microbial technology, assessment, monitoring and the early warning of agricultural environmental and climate change, crop -livestock-land use and resource comprehensive planning.
